Piper: This is From Where She Stands, a podcast connecting the storylines of Orange Is the New Black with stories from real women whose lives have been impacted by prison.  I'm Piper Kerman.  I wrote the memoir, Orange Is the New Black, My Year in a Women’s Prison to document my 13 months behind bars.  I’ll be talking with some of the actresses from Orange Is the New Black.

Dascha: My name is Dascha Polanco.

Laverne: Laverne Cox.

Diane: My name is Diane Guerrero.

Uzo: Uzo Aduba.

Danielle: I’m Danielle Brooks.

Piper: These actresses became invested not just in their characters but like Danielle Brooks’ says the show gave them a deeper awareness about how the entire prison system is structured for over 200,000 women.

Danielle: A lot of times we think oh well this person needs to be punished and it’s really about like how can we help them?

Piper: Every time I go behind prison walls, I learn something new and I hope you’ll come with us.  We’ll be hearing stories about transwomen in San Quinten State Prison.

Piper: Stories about being released and coming back to prison, having a family member detained by ICE and what it’s like to be a pregnant prisoner.

Piper: We’ll be talking about living in a place where things like handshakes aren’t allowed and being without the small things that can make us feel confident.
